Background
Many developing country medium-sized cities
are in the way of facing the impact of motorisation and will have to take important
decisions on future investments in transportation infrastructure. This transitional phase
makes such cities important targets to promote sustainable transportation practices.
International debate on sustainable transportation usually
targets highly populated cities. A forum to address transport problems and
sustainable alternatives in developing mid-sized cities is critically important. For this
reason, UCCEE convened to organise and fully sponsor a first workshop on sustainable
transport initiatives in developing countries.
"Deals on Wheels" was held in San Salvador, El
Salvador, on July 28-30, 1999, fully sponsored by UCCEE. Other institutions helped to
co-organise the workshop: the Intermediate Technology Development Group
(ITDG-Sri Lanka), the Peace and Development Research Group from Göteborg University, Centro Salvadoreño de Tecnología Apropiada (CESTA)
and the Ministry of Environment of El Salvador.
