Environmentally Sound Energy Development - India Pilot Project
The objective of the study is to contribute to the integration of environmental criteria into energy policy and planning, and to promote more environmentally benign energy production and use, in order to achieve environmentally sound energy development.
The study will have four main types of outputs:
Plan of Action
A plan on how the energy requirements needed to secure national development aims can be met with the minimal negative impacts. The plan will be time bound, identify funding and technology requirements for energy efficiency, renewable energy and development of endogenous capacity.
Planning models, methods and databases
Quantify the major environmental impacts of energy production and use and build up a database for using these data in the planning process.
Environmentally sensitized energy planners
Through workshops and informal training contribute to the sensitization of the energy planners in the government.
Reports on the project and the regional workshops
The report of the workshop will include a report of a regional workshop and also identify the applicability of similar studies in other countries in the region. The experiences gained in this study will be made available to planning and policy institutions in other developing countries.
Project organization
The project is being carried out by a team of more than 25 professionals at the Tata Energy Research Institute, New Delhi, organized in groups as follows:
energy demand: groups working on transport, agriculture, household (urban and rural), industry and commercial sectors
energy supply: power, coal, oil and natural gas, renewables
analytical framework: modelling and database.
Various Ministries of the Government of India are represented on the National Steering Committee, along with representatives from energy companies, etc. UNEP and the UNEP Collaborating Centre are represented on the International Steering Committee.
