The objective of the project was to develop
new approaches for rural electrification planning that integrate local
knowledge and prioritise scarce development resources.
The novel planning approach had three
important new elements: Focus on identifying development poles to ensure the
maximum impact, integration of local and national priorities and use of
geographic information system (GIS) as at tool to increase visibility and to
enhance efficiency.
The project was financed by the COOPENER
Programme of the European Commission.
IMPROVES-RE was implemented by
IED,
ETC and
Risoe National Laboratory through URC, in cooperation with national
organisations of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Cameroon.
